Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire, was born on February 19, 1630, in the Bhonsle Maratha clan to Shahaji and Jijabai. His father was a Maratha commander who served the Deccan Sultanate. With his valour and administrative talents, Shivaji made his empire from the collapsing Adilshahi sultanate of Bijapur. Shivaji is known for establishing a competent and progressive administration with the support of a disciplined military and a well-formed administrative structure after establishing his empire. On June 6, Shivrajyabhishek Sohala Din, the day he became king of the Maratha Empire, is observed. On this day, various programmes are held at the Raigad fort.
